Martin Regborn had his international senior breakthrough at the European Championships in Czech Jesenik in 2016 where he took the bronze medal at the long distance, only beaten by Daniel Hubmann (SUI) and Magne Dæhlie (NOR). He continued his strong season by finishing 7th at the WOC sprint. His good performance throughout the season gave him an 8th place in the overall World Cup in 2016. He started 2017 even better, winning the second World Cup race of the year - a middle distance in Finnish Lohja - 29 seconds ahead of Olav Lundanes (NOR).
